Celebrating The Profane

The Tide of the Culture War Shifts - NYTimes.com:

For a younger generation of voters, the old right-wing nostrums about the “sanctity of life” and the “sanctity of marriage” have lost their power, revealed as intrusions on human freedom.
Yes, as the NYTs celebrates, morality is indeed an "intrusion on human freedom" --  as are a lot of things. Death, disease, our corporeal selves -- requiring air, food, water, sleep, etc.. To be human is to deal with many "intrusions on freedom". "Sanctity", sacredness, that certainly ought to be stamped out,

No morality, or "morality of currently in power" ALSO turns out to be an "intrusion" unless you are able to meld your will 100% to that of The Party and it's wholly approved positions as described in the NYTs.

As philosophers have known forever, without God, there is no morality outside of power -- or rather, no morality with teeth, and let's face it, that is the only kind that has any effect on humans. Nietzsche's claim "God is dead" was a lament, not a boast -- without God and a religion like Christianity, "might", "the will", became morality. Hitler providing the most obvious example of what morality without God is like -- Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc. provide others. Thus, the celebration of the profane as opposed to the sacred.

Humans are moral -- we were either endowed by our creator, or were randomly selected over a few million years to have arrived at having an internal moral compass. It can be set in a lot of different directions -- beheading, marrying 9 year old girls, and killing infidels to get a bunch of virgins in heaven is a current setting in the news, but it will be set. The NYTs gleefully looks to the worship of The Party and The State as the ultimate moral arbiter ... the new profane as sacred.

So "sanctity" becomes outlawing Big Gulps, smoking, guns, gas burning transportation, etc, etc. Or maybe driving a high milage car, eating organic and even voting for The Party. Heil BO!

The NYTs celebrates the removal of restrictions on killing the unborn and monogamy. The old moral code created Western Civilization and took us to the moon -- but it took most of a couple thousand years to catch on and really get the job done. So the "sexual revolution" really got going in the '60s, "gay marriage" in 2001 in Denmark. One of the hallmarks of the "new morality" is ME ME ME with NO KIDS! (or very few).

I wonder how "no kids" works out in even a few hundred years? Well, the NYTs might be right here:

The shift in public opinion might not be enough for Democrats to keep the Senate this year. But over time, it may help spell an end to the politics of cultural division.
One way or another, totalitarianism or just the silence of a culture leaving the stage because it has no children to carry on, I think it is pretty certain that TP will "end the politics of cultural division" -- or as it used to be known, Liberal Democracy (the kind of "liberal" that meant pluralistic)

Climate Change, We Need a Beheading

Obama Lies, Punts at Climate Change Summit | Power Line:

An excellent article that points out that on Climate Change, reality is yet to break though to BO. One wonders how cold it really has to get before he at at least shuts up about Climate",  but it is an area with enough variability that the band can likely play on for a long time. It is almost always warmer or stormy somewhere -- that somewhere may not be in US, or even where there are very many humans at all (S Pole, N Pole, vast areas of ocean), but all the better -- the government funded "scientists" can pick any baseline, select or reject any data set that fails to fit their model, and the show can play on.

In this area, BO is still in "JV Mode" as he was in January relative to ISIS, or in "If you like your healthcare you can keep it" as he was prior to parts of BOcare kicking in last fall, so the lies come thick and heavy with nary a concern that anyone in the TP controlled MSM will do what this column does and debunk them one by one.

A little long, but he lied a lot!

Barry W Bush, Mission Relaunched !

Politico: Say, that Obama UN speech sounded a lot like … « Hot Air:

Good column pointing out that our fantasist in chief has yet again been mugged by reality. Some of the lines were downright amazing ... "Network of Death" vs "Axis of Evil". The on the job training is really really expensive and embarrassing to the apparently few remaining Americans with memories and enough brains to do some simple pattern matching.

“There can be no reasoning – no negotiation – with this brand of evil,” Obama said of ISIS after reciting a list of atrocities still unfolding where they control ground. “The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force.”
Well, DUH! Most kids figure this out after they have had their lunch stolen a couple of times or after a few times being beaten up on the bus -- apparently Barry is a VERY slow learner! Does he REALLY get it now, or is this just posturing for the sake of November? I'd guess posturing -- one doesn't really go through life as a feckless weasel and suddenly understand that not everyone is a weasel!
Definitely worthy of the read.  BO is at least being forced by events to face up to a few of the obvious realities of the world -- very late, very reluctantly and extremely incompetently as evidenced by his constant need to telegraph to the enemy what he WON'T do!

Will it be enough to head off a tragedy of 9-11 proportions or worse? There is always "Hope" -- not a lot of it, but our president having some contact with reality is much better than none!

NYC's de Blasio Murders Cross-Gender Fake Weather Analyst!

GroundhogGate: a sordid tale of sex, murder, and cover-ups in New York City | Human Events:

My God! Read it all, it is a lurid tale so nasty it is hard to even imagine!

On the brighter side, our resident Cuck was spotted today looking perky on hind haunches surveying the pond area, so there is still some decency left in the world!

I'm afraid we are looking at a whole lot more than 6 weeks of winter from here -- Chuck has been hitting the apples hard and is looking a bit portly -- probably wise given the outlook for another cold winter based on Global Warming!

Censorship US Style

News Flash: The Press Is Helping Obama Censor The News - Investors.com:

Trying to censor the press is bad enough. But the fact that reporters have repeatedly and meekly acquiesced provides clear evidence of their willingness to put partisanship ahead of the public's right to know.
If you don't think so, just try to imagine the White House press corps agreeing to such demands from any Republican administration.
While the Post deserves credit for exposing this, it hardly gave the story the prominence it's due. Instead, the editors buried it below the fold in the paper's Style section next to a piece about a famous concert violinist performing in a Metro station.
The reporter himself cluelessly dismisses the White House demands as involving "mostly trivial issues" — a claim contradicted by the White House's very attempt to hide such facts from the public.
Story broken in STYLE SECTION of WaPO ... ho hum. As mentioned in the article, it was the WH "Pool" that broke the "HW Bush doesn't understand supermarket scanners" blockbuster in '92 that helped defeat him. Seems reasonable that a president would like to have control over that sort of story -- and since BO is TP, it **IS** ... but as the article says, if there is ever an R in the WH again, see how that kind of control flies THEN!

BTW, if there is an R in the WH, what IS a "trivial issue"? Misspelling potato? How well you understand current grocery store operations? If you make up a word "misunderestimated"?

My view is that if there is an R in the WH there is no such thing as "trivial" -- every single action, no matter how small can and will be pulled out of context and the maximum negative effect possible will be extracted from it.

Kill The Poor, Personified

‘We Only Whisper It’ | National Review Online:

Evil doesn't always display itself openly, but after many years in the soul, it does have a tendency to become apparent ... look deeply into those eyes, they are hardened to their purpose, they know what they want to accomplish. She really could take the role of the old Spectre hag in a bond movie or the Wicked Witch of the Left with no makeup required!

The column documents the Vader Ginsburg connection to eugenics and genocide, but it is as old as statism. First you remove religion -- that which gives life meaning beyond mere drawing of breath, then you create a "brave new morality". The specifics really make no difference -- say "the greatest good for the greatest number" (utilitarianism). Sound pretty good?

How about "deformed children"? ... say Downs Syndrome like Trig Palin? Certainly they can't possibly be happy. Right? Many on the left have screeched in anger at the "criminality" of the the idiot Sarah Palin bringing the "retard" into the world -- sometimes a big too aggressively for the current level of "brave new morality", but it is clear they KNOW what OUGHT to be done!

I liked this quote from a Clinton advisor -- when you are The Party (Democrat) and you control the media, you don't have to whisper too much -- they are experts on what the "bitter clingers" can handle, so they will keep it quiet if you get a little carried away!
“You can start immediately to eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy, and poor segment of our country,” by making abortifacients cheap and universally available. “It’s what we all know is true, but we only whisper it.”
Once you take God out of the equation, humans lose inherent worth and become "assets and liabilities", at which point the State will apply some maxim like "the greatest good for the greatest number", which gives a lot of flexibility. How many "liabilities" can a State really afford? Isn't it just "reasonable" to minimize "liabilities"  and maximize "assets"?

So those in power -- THE PARTY, make the "choice". Abortion for some moves from a "right" to a "responsibility" to a "law" ... after all, the State has the interest of ALL in mind. Well, especially the "assets" -- and who are those? Well, THE PARTY!!! Certainly not "the bitter clingers", the gun toting zombies in fly-over country, the poor, the "less intelligent" -- come on, we are among friends here, no real reason to hurry.

Mankind has always known this force -- the force of death, destruction, malevolent power -- well, of Ruth Vader Ginsburg ... sometimes it is really easy to see without even looking hard.

How Is The Yemen Strategy Working Out ?

Bret Stephens: What Obama Knows - WSJ:

We were endlessly schooled on the idiocy of W and on the brilliance of BO, but this article points out a few concrete examples of where the BO pronouncements are dead wrong when compared to reality -- something that our media is not very interested in pointing out. The list covers Asia, South America and a few others, but I'll include the "Yemen Strategy" since it was used again recently as an example of how he would manage policy against ISIS.

The following is from his address to the nation on how he intends to proceed against ISIS ( I do not recognize their claim to the Levant as he seems to want to, so it is ISIS):
Now, it will take time to eradicate a cancer like ISIL.  And any time we take military action, there are risks involved –- especially to the servicemen and women who carry out these missions.  But I want the American people to understand how this effort will be different from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  It will not involve American combat troops fighting on foreign soil.  This counterterrorism campaign will be waged through a steady, relentless effort to take out ISIL wherever they exist, using our air power and our support for partner forces on the ground.  This strategy of taking out terrorists who threaten us, while supporting partners on the front lines, is one that we have successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia for years.  And it is consistent with the approach I outlined earlier this year:  to use force against anyone who threatens America’s core interests, but to mobilize partners wherever possible to address broader challenges to international order.
So how is that strategy working in Yemen? The following is from the linked article:
Now turn to Yemen. In 2012, after the Arab Spring, the president singled out Yemen as a model for a prospective political transition in Syria. Mr. Obama was at it again just two weeks ago, citing the fight against al Qaeda in Yemen as the model for the war he intends to wage against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Whoops. "Over the weekend," noted McClatchy's Adam Baron on Monday, "the growing gap between administration rhetoric and reality came to a head, as the acerbically anti-American Houthi rebels—who American diplomats allege have close financial and military ties with Iran—took control of many areas of the capital, Sanaa, with minimal resistance from the U.S.-supplied Yemeni armed forces."
As even Leon Panetta acknowledged on the 60 Minutes interview this last weekend, what W handed over to BO was a stable Iraq -- and BO blew it. Contrast the credulous media treatment of BO's constantly incorrect assessments with the fact that W doggedly worked through the problems in Iraq against howling from all sides to "cut and run" to succeed and hand over a stable Iraq to the incoming BO, and it would seem to be enough to get people to look at reality relative to W in somewhat the same way as the fall of the Berlin Wall forced many to re-assess Reagan.

But not quite yet I guess. It is going to take more significant real events for many to wake up and smell the true scent of BO!

No Coal Lumps for Naughty Energy Production?

BNSF pressured to deliver more coal | Star Tribune:

Happened to hear some of this on NPR this week. It seems that coal supplies in the Midwest and East are very low -- like 2002 low, and back then our belief in the likelihood of a mild winter was a lot higher, as well as our rail capacity to correct it.  We know coal is bad, we know our use of electric power is bad -- we ought to be ready to slide quietly away into the night heat-less and powerless in a frigid Midwestern winter, freezing to death with a clear conscience,  fully devoid of and sense of irony as we sacrifice ourselves to keep the planet from getting warmer.

But are we? Even MPR was concerned that the burden of much higher power costs might hit "the most vulnerable" harder as utilities paid high costs for transportation including trucking in the coal.

Shades of "Atlas Shrugged", the production of oil that could have been transported via the blocked  Keystone XL Pipeline now has to use rail -- like all resources, a limited one. That same limited resource has to be used to transport the grain harvest. Then, there is the significant factor that hit hard last winter -- when temps are low and snow heavy, the capacity of the rail network is further reduced -- power producers like Dairyland Power in W WI had to truck in coal last winter because they could not get enough via rail.

We are mostly focused on giant climate marches in NYC complaining how warm it is and how warm it is going to be in 100 years, as well as some actions that may or may not be war against a foe that may or may not be Islamic half way around the world rather than out own coal stocks for this coming winter.

What was that old nursery rhyme about the ant and the grasshopper again? Oh wait, kids would likely protest being taught such a thing .. and we REALLY need to listen to such wisdom!

Google and RDB Mated, TP CATALIST Is Their Offspring

Rule of Law » ‘CATALIST’: Obama’s Database for Fundamentally Transforming America:

A few years back we heard a decent amount about "Carnivore", an FBI terrorist search program that scanned vast amounts of data -- emails, texts, voice, etc looking for terrorist connects. The Party (TP-Democrat) hated it, W was president back then and it is always "chilling" if there are any "privacy issues" with an opposition president in the WH.

Small matter that 90%+ of those building and operating Carnivore were dues paying union TP members.

Well, there is a semi-private version of "Carnivore" now called "CATALIST" that is a "Big Data" program -- claimed to be fully legal, and may well be, that is wiring elections for TP. The linked article is pretty fair on the subject, I'll try to be really brief on the synapsis of the threat.  A lot of formerly thought to be brilliant pollsters and pundits were blind sided by BO in '12 ... the numbers looked like Romney ought to win. The analysis is that CATALIST is the big reason he didn't and it may be a big reason why this election is another "surprise".

The big picture here is that we can understand the import here since the left already went bonkers on this as far back as Reagan in the form of the "Religious Right" was getting out votes for Reagan -- never mind that Unions, The Sierra Club, Black Churches, Universities, etc had been doing this for Democrats for eons. Word of mouth and peers is the BEST way to get your voters active and out -- negative advertising is like junk mail. It moves the needle a few percentage points AT BEST, and it costs a lot -- it is a shotgun approach, little targeting.

But programs like CATLIST that know if you shop at Whole Foods, have a family member with a mental illness, don't attend church, own a Prius, etc are able to target you in a way that was never possible without what the computer industry calls "Big Data" -- at a very simple level, Google and Relational Data Base (RDB) mated and their offspring is Big Data / CATALIST.

The ability to gather vast amounts of data on people, identify their "hot buttons", and LINK THEM to like minded political workers is HUGE.  "God, Guns, Gays" was the old cry from the left as to how evil Republicans got elected. On the left it might be "Environmentalism, Atheism, Veganism, Pro "gay marriage", anti-gun ...".  But the funer the appeal, and who it is that makes the appeal, the more powerful it is.

There are reasons that this is an asymmetric battle space with a huge advantage going to TP,  I'll touch on a few here.
  • TP owns the universities and government. The brainpower to create and operate this kind of operation is pretty much in their camp.
  • The agencies that hold the data are government and government IS TP. We likely see a tiny fraction of the situation with little hints like the IRS scandal.  Your IRS financial data, your FBI data, your medical data -- they are all sitting in big government data bases. At the VERY LEAST, this can be "mined" (scanned for trends, correlations, etc without direct use of your ID) -- in the very likely case, items can be "leaked" across data bases with no record of "how we got that" WITH Idenity. We are only talking about "helping the voter connect with TP" after all -- a very good purpose if you are TP.
  • Conservatives may well have an easier time building a big data operation to track terrorists or make a profit. Like ALL technology, there is a lot that can be done here that is "good" or at least innocuous, but when used by the government, conservatives tend to get nervous. Their level of trust of the government is FAR lower -- and in fact their trust of large organizations of people is FAR lower. It likely stems from remembering things like the USSR and Nazi Germany were government operations, and the core belief that mankind is fallen and not infinitely perfectible in this world.
The simplest aspect here is that since over 50% of the population is now getting a check cut from the government in one form or another, all that is really required is for some especially dedicated TP "public servants" to be sure that those names are leaked to CATALIST so that the correlations have a good "seed".

Domination of their true enemy -- conservative opposition in this country, is what TP does best. They may be unwilling and ridiculous when it comes to foreign enemies (like telling them what we WON'T do, eg "boots on ground") but against what they see as domestic enemies, rest assured they are positively ruthless.

The Totalitarian Impulse

Liberals Want to Throw Us All In Jail. Or Worse. | Power Line:

We are living in perilous times. For the first time in America’s history, one of our political parties–the one that loses all the arguments–has given up on debate and threatens to use naked power to jail or otherwise silence those who point out the flaws in its theories. If we conservatives remain passive, there is a grave danger that our freedoms may be lost.
Nothing new in that paragraph for regular readers of this Blog, but even iconoclasts like myself occasionally like to have some corroboration that our ideas haven't slipped the surly bonds of sanity.

I'd caution the guys at PL on "the one that loses all the arguments" -- as Orwell (and a host of real totalitarian leaders in the 20th and current century) showed us so well, while it is very true that "The Party" (D) is losing the argument compared with reality -- on Global Warming, on the efficacy of big government, on their effect on the US and Western economies, on Iraq, etc, reality is only part of the case -- especially as TP gains more power.

North Korea has certainly lost horribly on the reality front, but for the inmates in that asylum, questioning their Mad Hatter of a "Dear Leader" is definitely a LOSING proposition -- as the column points out, being right in the real world can very well mran being dead in a TP controlled environment.

MAVEN Mars CLimate Change Explorer in Orbit

MAVEN spacecraft enters Mars orbit - CNN.com:

Earth scientists are excited to try to understand why climate changed on Mars -- they believe it used to be wetter with more atmosphere, but something changed. The satellite will be looking for evidence of ancient Koch brothers oil refineries and the potential that there was a previous evil ruler there approaching the planet killing malfeasance of W Bush.

Scientists are baffled what could have happened to Mars. Prior to W and the Koch brothers, we know earth was graced with a 100% stable climate -- no heat waves, no droughts, no floods, no cold periods,  just a perfectly stable Garden of Eden environment. We are 100% certain and settled on what happened here, and know that transporting 100's of thousands of people to NYC to carry signs on Socialism, Indian Rights, etc is certain to fix our problem.

Perhaps in a century or so we can organize a march on Mars to fix the climate there.

A Nation Without Thrones

Progressives Enthroned | National Review Online:

I Samuel 8, 6-9: But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord7And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

The US was founded as a nation without a king, but the natural desire of man is to crown a king.

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports….Let it simply be asked, Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that National morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”- George WashingtonFarewell Address 1796

The FDR series is a good example of the natural desire of the populace to exchange their freedoms for the worship of an earthy king. As Power Line said on the subject:

The Roosevelts leaves us in the realm of hagiography. Seventy years after FDR’s death, it is apparently too soon to ask Burns et al. to strive for a balanced perspective on the Roosevelts. My mom was a teen-age girl who cried when she heard that FDR had died; Ken Burns essentially wants his viewers to retain the perspective of a teen-age girl circa 1945 on the Roosevelts. This is “history” for wide-eyed innocents.
The perspective of a free people can not be allowed to be that of a crying teen, freedom demands much more responsibility than that. There was a time in the late 1700's when a group of men looked at history to date, the Bible, the world, and gave a people the great gift of a nation founded on rights of INDIVIDUALS endowed by THEIR CREATOR and UNALIENABLE, as Franklin warned:

The deliberations of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 were held in strict secrecy. Consequently, anxious citizens gathered outside Independence Hall when the proceedings ended in order to learn what had been produced behind closed doors. The answer was provided immediately. A Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.” (Benjamin Franklin)
Or even more to the point:

“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters. ” (Benjamin Franklin)

We have crossed that magic Rubicon where over 50% of the population takes from the other 50% and maybe more importantly, future generations. A Republic demands mature thinking people looking to the creation of a better future, not the corrupt looting of current and future producers in the name of more consumption for today. The Roosevelt's won, the "progressives" have been enthroned.

Big Money Swaying Election

Karl Rove: Money Main Reason GOP Senate Majority Still in Doubt:

Swaying it to The Party (TP-Democrat), so very little is said about it. We do know that poll numbers are tightening while BO's numbers are tanking and the situation in the world as described by our SecDef as "exploding all over", SOMETHING must account for it.

I can only report on what I see directly. In IA, Joni Earnst is taking a 3 to 1 or worse negative ad hammering from TP ... and it STILL remains close!
For now, he writes, Democrats are spending more in such key senatorial races as Alaska ($6.4 million to $3.6 million), Arkansas ($6.2 million to $4.6 million), Colorado ($8.5 million to $7 million), Iowa, ($8.5 million to $5.6 million), Louisiana ($5.7 million to $5.6 million) and North Carolina ($17.6 million to $7.8 million).
$5.6 vs $8.5 don't fully account for that, but I'm sure that all the "Dark Money" is not counted in those figures either.

TP relies on it's media arm doing most of the heavy lifting to keep the low information voter in the dark -- and then they have the steady stream of "Undocumented Democrats" living and dead that reliably come out of vote thanks to "mail it in", "no ID allowed" and a host of other techniques to (eg. bogus legal actions .

It's a miracle that there are still any opposition candidates elected ... a miracle that TP tirelessly works to suppress.

Mass Intelligence, 1982, 9-21-2014

Busy Days Precede a March Focusing on Climate Change - NYTimes.com:

Lack of perspective and hubris, two hallmarks of humanity that are often starkly displayed in the large -- hundreds of thousands of agitated, morally certain, angry, self righteous humanity displaying their certainty that the mob has to be right.

The linked article about the Global Warming (GW) march in NYC scheduled for this Sunday mentions a couple of times that this is expected to be the largest march since the nuclear freeze march in '82.

I was very alive n '82, it was my 4th year at IBM. There were people at IBM "10%?" that were VERY afraid of the "Reagan the madman" ... some had "bug out shelters" in NW WI, most were just afraid, honestly afraid. The HATRED of Reagan and Thatcher in the early '80s for a large segment of the population -- close in size and even more vocal than even the GW segment today was significant. Reagan was maligned by the press and intelligentsia worse than the Tea Party today -- there was no Fox News or Talk Radio to defend him.

"Reagan was going to get us all killed". They were CERTAIN of it. They were ABSOLUTELY certain not only that the USSR was going to be around "at least as long as the US, and likely longer", but they and NPR, NYTs, etc had a good deal of glowing coverage of life in the USSR -- free education, free medical care, total equality for women, abortion on demand for free ... only the "closed minded" in America could not appreciate the many advantages of their system. Daniel Ortega, Marxist dictator of Nicaragua was a cool celebrity -- a modern Che Guevera. He hobnobbed with Bianca Jagger.

All those 100's of thousands of people marching were absolutely certain that things like the MX missile, and any sort of missile defense system, "Star Wars" or other would absolutely get us killed! To think otherwise showed delusion, a total unwillingness to understand reality as it actually was. Intellectual weakness -- having been brainwashed by the evil Reagan and the "Military Industrial Complex" -- the elite in "The Party" (D), education and the MSM all KNEW that Reagan's proposals COULD NOT WORK. The USSR was (in their view at the time, thankfully) with us forever -- we would be better to learn from the many good points of their system than to malign it and pretend that it could be defeated as the idiot Reagan proposed.

So here we are today. Some of the same people that organized that march, certain then, and STILL certain -- their ability to question their predictions has not changed a bit in over 30 years. They were certain that folks that disagreed with their World View and predictions then were "stupid, deluded, not willing to see the real world, etc). They feel the same way now, and I'm quite certain they, and their intellectual offspring, will be just as certain on a new front 30 years from now.

There is a reason that our founders distrusted democracy and founded a REPUBLIC. Hubris and lack of perspective would be two of those reasons.

Stopped Clocks and Time Machines

Obama Beyond Bush - NYTimes.com:

The mental pain and gyrations that liberals are going through as they come to realize that BO is and always was a disaster, the world is blowing up all over, and the domestic economy is disastrously stuck in late '70s mode, is interesting to watch. I started this with a somewhat hopeful note for dawning reason in an obviously "progressive" ideological brain.
And with the Middle East, those defenders sometimes turn Bush’s epic mistakes into Obama’s hall pass. Perhaps he hasn’t figured out what’s right, but he isn’t guilty of the original wrong, which is constantly being litigated anew, as if a fresh verdict on the events of 2003 could alter the challenges and stakes of 2014.
It looked like this guy had figured out that any policy which requires a time machine to be successful is not very likely to be successful, but alas, this columnist is still stuck in his ideological cave, staring at shadows on the wall trying to make the shadows he sees fit his ideological model. He is in a bad way.
The I.R.S. scandal was not as bad as Watergate. (Nothing’s ever as bad as Watergate, which serves a nifty historical function as the gold standard of executive malfeasance and mendacity.)
NOTHING is ever as bad as Watergate? It is true that everyone believes in something -- Christians believe in the deity and saving Grace of Christ, some folks just "believe they will have another beer". I submit that "I believe I will have another beer" is INFINITELY better on the "gotta believe in something" front than "nothing's ever as bad as Watergate"!

Nobody died in Watergate, nobody even had their donor lists released or summarily audited on an ideological basis. Yes, yes, I understand that if your ideology rules all else in your brain, it is OK to see those that don't agree with that ideology punished by your party, but even worse than people dying? Try another beer
If we’re determined to glance back at a figure who flatters Obama, let’s really have at it and look all the way to Warren Harding. Golf wasn’t his only distraction. He also had a thing for poker. And when it came to seeming and feeling overwhelmed, the 29th president, an Ohio Republican, reputedly confessed to friends that he was lost in the job.

By that measure Obama is a rock. But it doesn’t make him a boulder.
How far the mighty have fallen. I understand that someone with the ideological model of this columnist MUST find a Republican rather than the actual 20th century gold standard for failed presidents, Carter, but to see the mental gyrations required is almost painful.

Harding and Coolidge presided over the "roaring 20's" a period of peace and prosperity in America. "Progressives" easily forget the harm an activist president can do, especially one that fails the Outlaw Josie Wales test ("A man's got to know his limitations"). This means they lack the understanding that a stopped clock is at least right twice a day, but a clock that is actively off is NEVER right.

"First do no harm" is an EXCEEDINGLY wise maxim, impossible for "progressives" to understand because they demand that "SOMETHING be done!". One would hope that maybe they won't forget it quite so quickly after BO., but I'm quite certain that is a vain hope.

Fascism, BOism, The NFL

The left prepares to cash in on Ray Rice | Power Line:

The last couple of weeks it has become obvious that it is time to brush up on our "isms" ... Fascism and Socialism being the main ones that need to be re-understood from time to time, because the last thing The Party (TP) and guys like BO want is truth in political labeling.

If you tend to not believe a lot of what I say (ALWAYS a very wise decision!), you can access some of my own brush up source material from Thomas Sowell and Jonah Goldberg (his excellent book "Liberal Fascism"  (Moosetracks review) ought to be read by all thinking Americans).

First a simple way to sort these out ... and we will throw in Communism for good measure, is:
  • Communism -- The State owns everything. No individual property.
  • Socialism -- The State owns "the major industries", you get to keep your house (maybe).
  • Fascism -- The State decrees and regulates business, private life, etc. but it doesn't "own it" ... only the credit when things go well, business owns the blame when it goes bad.
  • Freedom -- The State is the servant of the people. It is limited by a Constitution to what it is allowed to do. Man is free because government is limited. (Reagan)
I actually think that Fascism ought to be re-defined as BOism today, because he is really the perfect embodiment -- it could also be called "Scapegoatism". Here is Sowell on the subject:
What President Obama has been pushing for, and moving toward, is more insidious: government control of the economy, while leaving ownership in private hands. That way, politicians get to call the shots but, when their bright ideas lead to disaster, they can always blame those who own businesses in the private sector.
Politically, it is heads-I-win when things go right, and tails-you-lose when things go wrong. This is far preferable, from Obama's point of view, since it gives him a variety of scapegoats for all his failed policies, without having to use President Bush as a scapegoat all the time.

Like all human institutions though, these get muddy. Nationalism, a form of Tribalism is a endemic to all humans but especially Fascism. Christianity was a GIANT leap forward because it allowed all mankind to be part of a single "tribe" or "extended family" ... blood brothers in Christ's blood.  BO is an avowed Luo tribalist whose declared identity is in the anti-colonial tribalism of his father and grandfather ("Dreams FROM my Father").
For a long time I sat between the two graves and wept. When my tears were finally spent, I felt a calmness wash over me. I felt the circle finally close. I realized that who I was, what I cared about, was no longer just a matter of intellect or obligation, no longer a construct of words. I saw that my life in America— the black life, the white life, the sense of abandonment I’d felt as a boy, the frustration and hope I’d witnessed in Chicago— all of it was connected with this small plot of earth an ocean away, connected by more than the accident of a name or the color of my skin. The pain I felt was my father’s pain. My questions were my brothers’ questions. Their struggle, my birthright.
Obama, Barack (2007-01-09). Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance (Kindle Locations 7524-7529). Random House, Inc.. Kindle Edition.
In this post-Christian, post-Constitutional America, led by a Fascist Luo Tribesman, even the NFL feels the lash of the Fascist overlords. This is a quote from the linked article:
Whenever an institution becomes as massive as the NFL, the ideologically driven will attempt to enlist the institution for their own purposes. There was a time when some conservatives enlisted the NFL in an ideological sense as a symbol of American virtues. Nowadays, though, it’s the left that wants to use football, not as a metaphor for American virtue (in which it doesn’t really believe), but to advance specific agenda items and/or to shake the NFL down.
The  Powerline column is well done, but I fear it fails to make the proper connections ... in a Constitutional Republic America, there would be no such ideologically driven power, in a Socialist America, the government would own the NFL. Only in a Fascist America is what we see possible :
But the NFL is not in the message-sending business and has no duty to send correct messages to “society.” If the criminal justice system is functioning properly, “society” will receive the proper message about domestic violence. If it isn’t, that’s not the NFL’s fault.
Ah, but in a Fascist / Tribal society, it IS the NFL's responsibility! It is the responsibility of all in "the tribe" to be on the right message -- be that environmentalism, gay marriage, gun control or the war on big-gulps! In MN, Marx Dayton has similarly weighed in on Adrian Peterson.

The non-Christian reader might say, "Well, I don't see how being a Christian nation is any better than this, it is just different rules".

I'm not going to do a long answer to that, but for a few points -- Christianity is a couple thousand years old, Fascism is a "tribalism of the day / the man", it's rules are arbitrary in a way well beyond Christianity, even if you don't recognize divinity. Since Christianity is transcendent (at least in time for a non-believer), it is much more immune from the day to day whims of individuals and groups  -- it short circuits the "a lot of people agree with me" approach to "right" (just a version of might (numbers) make right) ... the question of right and wrong becomes more than only a matter of the biggest armies.

One of my favorite turns of history was Stalin's "How many divisions does the Pope have"?  It turned out, just enough to consign the USSR to the ash heap of history!

May we constantly pray that enough divisions rise up to do the same to modern BOism.

A Little Unraveling from the New York Times

The Great Unraveling - NYTimes.com:

Nothing in this column that hasn't been predicted or observed in this Blog since at least 2006, but one by one the more idealistic of the left recognize the "unraveling", the rot, the decline, the inevitable slide when the people and policies they imagined to bring about a "brave new world" inevitably and inexorably fail horribly.

More poetic than my writing, and this is the New York Times. Reality gets us all ... eventually. They may not see their role in it, but as he mentions at the end, connecting those dots is especially hard when it is of yourself they speak.

Let's see, "The challenge of our time" is supposed to be Global Warming. Read the linked column and imagine where Climate Change is likely to be on the list of world issues if this "unraveling" continues.

W Poll Numbers 124, BO 9!

MRC Study: TV Buries the Bad News on Obama’s Collapsing Polls:

In '06, the big three networks found W's sliding numbers to be worthy of 124 mentions, this year, BO's similarly sliding numbers are worth 9 mentions in the same period.

Media Research Center analysts reviewed every reference on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts to public opinion polls from January 1 through August 31, 2014, and from the same time period in 2006. Eight years ago, the networks aired 124 evening news reports which cited public opinion polls about either President Bush’s overall approval rating or his handling of specific policies. In 2014, those same broadcasts produced only nine reports which mentioned public opinion surveys related to President Obama. - See more at: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/rich-noyes/2014/09/08/mrc-study-tv-buries-bad-news-obamas-collapsing-polls#sthash.HPgrpfIT.dpuf

We know the answer -- people are affected by continually hearing about a presidents low poll numbers. It creates a feedback loop and the poll numbers go lower -- Americans like winners, not losers, and when someone's poll numbers are sliding and you are asked what you think of them, 90% of people will go with the crowd.

So it was important for the MSM to pound on W's poll numbers as it is now important for them to say nothing about BOs -- they wanted Democrats elected in '06 and hammering on W's poll numbers was a good way to help that. This year they want to minimize Democrat losses, so keeping BO's numbers out of the news is the right strategy.

Oh, and maybe we ought to do somethings to make sure that nobody BUT the MSM gets to have a voice -- let's have a lot of campaign finance control to prevent any speech from the "wrong side" from leaking out!

MSM Coverage, Palin vs Hillary

Democratic Party Media Run Interference for Hillary | Power Line:

The kind of simple easy analysis of the obvious that I believe we all need to do to keep a little perspective on how much our news diet is wired to what The Party and it's MSM arm want us to see and think.

So the Palin family gets in a brawl in Anchorage -- let's see, how much do we hear about John Edwards these days?? Nuff said.

Oh, State scrubbed a bunch of documents to remove anything that might embarrass Hillary? Now THAT is a story we DON'T need to hear anything about!

Think about how much coverage any rumor, innuendo, etc related to possible questions about how good an Air National Guard pilot GW Bush was in the guard from '68-'74. '74 - '04 is 30 years and it was a huge story -- huge enough to take down Dan Rather trying to peddle "fake but true" documents in an effort by CBS News to directly influence the '04 election. Any concern of a "Citizen's United" type about a major corporate media outlet directly trying to influence an election using forged documents? Nope.

Benghazi? That was 2012, Hillary was Secretary of State, our Ambassador was killed -- no story here folks,  move along. "Republican witch hunt".

The most insidious part of this is that "most people" -- 80-90%, don't want to be seen as "rocking the boat, not in the mainstream, etc". Questions about W's guard record become "normal day to day news conversation" ... exposure makes such stories seem perfectly valid. "There MUST be something there, or the media wouldn't cover it so much".  Ah, the credulous lambs -- exactly what TP and the MSM want to foster.

Then we have the reverse, the MSM basically carries the "What does it matter now" water for Hillary ... even days after the event it is "old news, nothing to discuss here", and to even mention the word "Benghazi" identifies you as somebody that is not following the "standard media narrative" -- a spot that 80%+ of people are uncomfortable with. They don't want to be an "outlier", so they stay quiet.

And so a once free and vibrant people is ground down to be afraid to stand up and question the message that TP and the MSM so carefully crafts for them, and freedom dies. This is exactly how a free people slowly slide to a totalitarian state with nary a whimper.

BO ISIL, Definition Matters

Why Obama’s use of the term ISIL instead of ISIS is actually really important – Glenn Beck:

One has to laugh ... our former president was ahead of his time ... "Depends on what your definition of Is Is!"

Glenn covers what I've covered here before ... the Levant encompases Israel, BO DOES want "peace in the Middle East" ... have a Caliphate that runs from Egypt through Turkey and there will be peace!

Fat Drunk and Stupid

We Have Always Been at War With ISIL! | Power Line:

The video at the link is from CNN, and it would make one roll on the floor and laugh if it was not so sad. BO has been very clear that "The War on Terror" is over. But now, we are doing "something" that Lurch (The French looking former Senator that served in Vietnam) characterizes as "A Very Significant Counter Terrorism Operation" (VSCTO) ... kind of reminds me of MUTO from Godzilla ... Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism".

The sycophants at CNN are having a hard time figuring out what the rulers that they are sworn to support and never question even WANT them to say. Is it a "war"?, is it a VSCTO? Is it with ISIL, ISIS, or as NPR calls it "The self-named Islamic State" ... no longer feeling good calling it ISIS after his Linksmanship BO said it was "Not Islamic and not a State", and continues to add credence to it's largest territorial claims as "The Levant" which is the whole Eastern Mediterranean including Gaza, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Cyprus, Iraq and Southern Turkey.

We are right back to the late 70s ... a nation so confused and out of touch with reality that we are ripe for any sort of major attack. We have no leadership and are in the situation of being the biggest guy in the bar dead drunk, stumbling around being stupid with our pants around our knees and just waiting for someone to kick us in the balls and get a cheer from the rest of the patrons.

A Nice Simple Diagram of Liberal Inconsistency

The Law of Supply and Demand In One Venn Diagram | Power Line:

Replace "Krugman" with "liberals" and it just about covers it. It is much worse than this picture -- liberals are consistently inconsistent because they believe that they can take all sorts of actions in the real world and somehow pick and choose the results -- often claiming they will achieve the exact opposite result of what their actions are guaranteed to achieve in the real world. Or, they know what they are doing and simply want to create a dependent voter population that will keep them in power.

Thus, on one hand they claim that the ONLY effect of raising the minimum wage will be to help minimum wage workers by giving them more per hour. However, when the price of something is raised (labor), the demand for it WILL go down -- the only question is how much, which economists attempt to answer by "elasticity". Demand for cigarettes was often used as an example when I was taking economics, however there isn't anything that is perfectly inelastic -- it would have to have no substitutes and all consumers would have to have infinite wealth relative to the price of the commodity -- ie. be ABLE to pay whatever the price rose to.

But I digress. The fast food market is quite elastic and there are lots of substitutes -- technology being the obvious one, less people eating more expensive fast food, etc. Raising the minimum wage always reduces the number of people working -- a win-win for Democrats, since both the minimum wage workers and the unemployed tend to vote Democrat. BUT, the fiction given to the public is that raising the minimum wage will not cause more unemployment, when it is a given that it will.

Which as the chart points out, might mean that people that don't understand economics are fooled -- but the flip side means that can't be true. Cap and trade argues that "supply and demand works!" -- that by raising the price of using carbon, the demand for carbon will fall.

So if liberals were reality based, they would say that they are fine with the economy being vastly slowed by taxes and fees on carbon, because they care about warming in 100 years more than they do about jobs, income, etc today.

On the raising the minimum wage they would admit they are fine with a LOT less people having jobs as long as a few can have higher wages.. Or they would admit that they are absolutely fine with the lowering of productivity and national wealth via high taxes on corporate and personal income, because having everyone's standard of living being generally lowered by redistributing income so they are more government dependent is perfectly in line with their strategy to be a one party socialist state!

The left is well on it's way to achieving it's goals -- inconsistency and force are the two cornerstones of leftward thought.

The Healing Power of Beheading in Islam

Beheading infidels: How Allah ‘heals the hearts of believers’ | Human Events:

Since we have now been schooled by BO that ISIS is NOT Islamic, this article is probably beside the point. If they WERE Islamic though, this article would really be helpful to our understanding since it uses the Koran, Sura and Hadith to explain how violence and beheading is pleasing to Muhammad and should be used by his followers to "heal their hearts".
This, then, is the true significance of Koran 9:14-15: “Fight them, Allah will torment them with your hands [mortally wounding and eventually decapitating ‘Amr], humiliate them [pulling his beard], empower you over them [standing atop him], and heal the hearts of the believers, removing the rage from their hearts [at the sight of his decapitated head].”
Islam teaches that all the behaviors practiced by ISIS are pleasing -- in fact the Angel Gabriel finds running a rope through a severed head to be quite humorous -- but that is from an ISLAMIC viewpoint.

We however know that ISIS is NOT Islamic, because BO has explained that to us -- so why THEY act as they do is still a mystery. Bad day on the links?

BO 666:666 "Thou shalt worship BO and his holy words. Lo, though he driveth through the rough, he will fear not, his weed and his blow (but no heroin) they comfort him, and he will make a table and hang with his personal gay chef for 4 or 5 hours if he needs to chill".

I'm glad we are not up against an Islamic enemy.

The Most Important Historical Fact

Christianity grounded in the historical fact of the resurrection | Human Events:

The whole article is good, but if you have time to just read one paragraph, this is it:
It’s one thing to suggest that someone would die for an ideology he believes in even without physical evidence; it’s altogether another to contemplate that men would die for something they absolutely knew to be false. For if Jesus Christ had remained in the tomb and had not appeared to them, they likely would have believed their earlier hope had been for naught, but in any case, they wouldn’t have manufactured a mythical story that they had seen him alive when they hadn’t just so they could have the pleasure of dying for nothing. Dwell on that for a moment — seriously.
This is the one historical fact of eternal significance. Without it, all of history, past, present and future  is a meaningless joke ... a tale,  Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.

Straw War, Slow Surrender

http://www.theonion.com/articles/obama-to-assure-nation-that-isis-campaign-will-be,36898/

We hired a community organizer to be a president and that has been heavily on display the last couple of weeks. The best article I've seen covering the speech is the linked from the Onion: "ISIS Campaign Will Be Drawn-Out Ordeal We’re Used To" One of the rules of the organizer is to "define your opponent" -- so he tries to build the straw man that ISIL is neither Islamic or a State.

As an aside, BO tends to use "ISIL"  -- Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" bs "ISIS" - Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The general term is ISIS, he persists in using ISIL. Two likely explanations are 1). The "Levant" is much bigger -- Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Cyprus, Southern Turkey, so maybe he wants to draw attention away from Iraq and Syria, two areas his foreign policy failures are especially glaring 2). As having been a strong supporter of Islamic conquest (eg. Muslim Brotherhood), I suspect he sees "The Levant" as all legitimate Muslim territory, including Israel, so it is natural for him to use that term

In community organizing or politics, especially with a helpful media, defining your opponent is a great thing -- thus we have Tea Party Racists, Republicans against ALL taxes, women, working families, Hispanics, the environment, etc and a host of other solid TP / media arm definitions -- they are false, but when you control the media, the majority can be largely confused. ISIS however, exists outside of our media fishbowl and trying to define them as just another BO straw man only highlights the glaring naivete of this JV president.

Telling your adversary what you WON'T do is foolish -- even if you can't be trusted. BO is already sending in "military advisors", no doubt there are special forces on the ground for at least target designation, so of course the "no troops" statement is a lie from the git go  -- which both we and they know by now since his lips were moving. We and they also know that his weasel words will limit his ability to "do what is required" in the unpredictable future -- at least some, besides, he is always a tentative weasel.

Taking things off the table aids nothing but the enemy in the battle -- but it may assuage your political base, and both we and ISIS know that is what BO really cares about . It would better for ISIS to at least worry that we might lob a tactical nuke into Tkrit in the right situation -- a Predator fired nuke would be a good thing to show them, if for no reason but to give them something to think about at bedtime. NOTHING should be "off the table"!

W bore the burden of "going it alone" -- our TP controlled MSM constantly reminded us of this. America was "alone and misled".  The ruse required not recognizing Britain a country, but when TP needs to make a false case,  reality must suffer. Actual W coalition?  37 nations, 25K troops http://www.history.army.mil/html/books/059/59-3-1/CMH_59-3-1.pdf Want to place any bets on the numbers in the BO Straw Coalition?

It isn't a "war" ... BO ends those. So what is it? Slow Surrender?

BO Ended War In Iraq, or He Didn't, His Own Words

Watch to the end. There is nothing new here for readers of this blog, it is a minute and the end convinces any sentient person that this man is not to be trusted AT ALL!

Sorry, Wrong Number

Letter: Holder Aide Accidentally Calls Issa Staff for Help Spinning IRS Scandal:

Human error is a constant in the universe, and even the supposedly brilliant left wing seems to not be immune. In this case it illuminates something we all know to be going on, but have been admonished to not speak of what happens behind the curtain of government.

This is one of those stories that the MSM just doesn't carry because even though it is completely obvious that The Party (TP) now works seamlessly between it's currently elected arm and it's vast unionized resources in the permanent government bureaucracy, the fictional propaganda narrative is that DoJ, IRS, NSA, etc are "non-partisan". Yes, and making money is the farthest thing from the mind of any used car salesman -- he is just there to get you the best car at the lowest price!

So a DoJ staffer erroneously calls up the Republican staff rather than his buddies on the Democrat Elijah Cummings staff to do a little partisan posturing, media spin control ... OOOPS, 3 min hold then "oh, just calling to chat"!

Note that this is NOT the "your side does the same thing" kind of story. The government agencies are 99% populated by union Democrats with a few "enemy Republican appointees" sprinkled in when there is an R in the WH. The minority party simply doesn't get to play ball this way -- not that they might not WANT to if they had the chance, they ARE politicians after all, but when the other team controls all the day to day levers of government, you just don't have the potential to do this.

Bad Magic: Human Freedom vs Abject Dependence on Government

The Magical President doesn’t exist: What the left must really do to defeat the wingnuts - Salon.com:
Let’s be clear: There is neither a Democratic nor a progressive consensus on what is to be done there. All we have is a profound skepticism, and I’ll take that over a cynical Cheneyesque certainty, built on lies to the American people. Disagreement, even deadlock, is preferable.
You mean to say that the folks of "Hope and CHANGE!", "We are the ones we have been waiting for!", Faux Grecian columns, "this is when the oceans stopped rising",  Russian Reset, winning a Nobel prize for winning an election and a host other highly confident items claim that all they ever had was "profound skepticism" and "gridlock is preferable"? Wow, color me skeptical.

BO was popular in '08, but I don't think even "the one" broached the kind of 80%+ certainty that the American people had about going to war in Iraq. Oh sure, it was "a lie", but a "lie" also supported by nearly the entire Democrat leadership -- with the exception of BO and Wellstone reporting in from Uranus (or their anus). Of course BO needed a lot of time to even figure out that he is really opposed to ISIS. Yes, Cheney is the only one that has ever been "certain" when viewed from the far left edge of the universe with your head suffering a cranial rectal inversion.

This political season opens against a backdrop of profound pessimism, captured in an August Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll that found that 71 percent of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track. The president’s approval rating is at an all-time low, but so is that of congressional Republicans. Even worse, the two big stories dominating the end-of-summer headlines – the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri. and the rise of ISIL – only deepen the political gloom, because they reflect two enormous American problems that are coming to seem almost unsolvable: profound and persistent racial injustice, and the shape-shifting chaos that is Iraq.
I'll be damned, how did we POSSIBLY get here? Why in '08 it wasn't just the subscribers to the recently minted "Magical President theory", but the giddy mood of the whole MSM and broad swaths of the electorate that had elected a savior -- Washington, Lincoln or FDR -- it was hard to pick which one to compare BO with, and many thought he was far better than any of them. Maybe than ALL of them rolled together!

But now? Well now:
Democrats have two months to make sure this election doesn’t turn out like 2010 did. It’s not about the president right now, and we shouldn’t wait until 2016 for a new magical president. The kind of thoroughgoing change we need won’t happen in eight years, or even 80. It’s an eternal battle, the constant effort to expand the realm of human freedom to everyone, against the constant crusade by the wealthy to ensure that the trappings of human dignity – education, leisure, family life, childhood itself – are reserved for those who can afford to pay for them. The Kochs and their allies are trying to repeal the 20th century. Progressives can’t just suit up for that battle every four years.
Got that?  "It's not about the president"!  Strange that in '06, there was no shortage of articles on "Bush Referendum".

Note that  "It" won't happen in eight years or even 80! It's an "eternal battle" -- the battle for government to squeeze the last bit of individual motivation and thought out of the last of the masses. Oh, they will tell you it is "the wealthy" that want to prevent "human dignity" ... you know, education, family life, childhood itself", but are we really that foolish? "The Wealthy" ARE The Party! How many Kerry's, Edwards, Dayton's, Kennedys, etc, etc do we need to see before the man in the street understands it?

Who is it that wants to decree what families may and may not do with their children? Who is it that increasingly demands 12-16 years and more of PUBLIC "education" that is much more about state indoctrination than it is about "teaching" anything, especially how to be a free person in a free society? "Childhood itself"? Now there is somewhat of a mystery -- in one way, the left seeks to extend childhood for the entire life -- never leaving the state teat, being regulated and monitored in every movement and action. OTOH, it is THEIR version of "childhood" -- from state mandated and controlled "head start" to state sponsored and controlled daycare, after school programs, summer programs and Youth Corps. Their stated (and directly advertised) battle is to create a nation of "Julia's" or "Pajama Boys" ... perpetual adolescent dependence as the model for a nation.

I find this column to be highly pessimistic from the "progressive" POV. They are so far down the road on their "battle" already -- they own education, the government bureaucracy, law, medicine (BOcare), nearly all of the media -- and as evidenced by their vote on the 1st Amendment, they seek to completely control all political speech 100%. Losing the Senate in '14 would have no effect on their agenda -- BO will rule by executive order as he does now and we are certainly not talking about a veto override capable majority! This is a rather hollow call to lefty arms.

Yes, the polls don't look good right now for the BO state, and I'm sure that is a concern to the ministry of information / education / propaganda  ... Herr Goebbels likes to dot all the i's and cross all the t's, but really, the guys over at Salon shouldn't let a few poor poll numbers from the unwashed masses get them so bent out of shape. There is no prospect at all of the evil forces of conservatism being able to make one iota of progress in getting America moving in the next two years.

The BO magic veto pen will insure that the US crawls on on in the left ditch, with not a hint of even a glance toward the roadway far to the right -- no matter what the results of the election.  The "eternal battle" isn't even visible from here -- we would have to have a basic understanding that "human freedom" and "abject dependence on a bankrupt government" are not equivalent terms to even begin such a battle.

Something We All Agree On

Glenn Beck Shares Never-Before-Told Story of Personal Abuse After Janay Rice Defends Her Husband | Video | TheBlaze.com:

I graduated in '74, so got basically the standard "Little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice" childhood where girls were to be treated specially up until sometime in High School when the "not only are they special, they are absolutely equal in every way" gospel was pounded in as ERA and other efforts gathered steam. Note, I didn't even question it in those days -- my conservatism was ALL post Carter Malaise. Besides, they seemed pretty nice to me anyway, and it was easy to believe they were AT LEAST equal, if not superior since it could be hard to carry on witty conversation with them without the occasional unexplained brain freeze.

It seems that Glenn Beck and virtually all liberals and feminists are in absolute agreement on Ray and Janay Rice, and that in itself is enough to give me pause. What seems to be absolute truth is that punching a woman in your company -- even if she is pushing and punching, is very high on the list of moral sins. Certainly badder than pushing a convenience store clerk around to steal cigars, or even breaking the eye socket of a police officer -- which have been adjudicated in the high court of public opinion as "minding your own business" ... at least while black.

Even further, females that are willing to marry "guys like this" (unlike other crimes, violence against women is not a "behavior", it is like being gay, it is "who you are")  are mentally damaged -- they have no public standing in their opinion. They are far from "equal" -- they are 2nd class to no class citizens -- and in similar fashion to the abusers, their willingness to be around these guys defines them, it is an existential condition, not a choice.

If Rice was gay and dating a slightly built male, maybe even engaged to same, would the public court arrive at the same verdict? I have a very strong suspicion the answer would be "no", which leads me to believe that violence against a woman in your company is a final remaining bastion of allowed feminine inferiority. Women are to be treated specially in this case.

As an aside, this does at least break a stereotype that I once learned from a black friend, which went something like "You think black dudes are tough? Ha, tell any brother that his woman is looking for him and is going to give him what for and you will see one scared black dude! Black women are scary fighters!" Goes to show that you can't believe everything a black guy tells you -- but then I guess BO already covered that!

My mind wanders a bit in wondering if the store clerk in Ferguson had been female, would that have made a difference? Even more tantalizing is the idea of the officer having been female -- even if white.

The idea of the "scapegoat" is as old as man himself -- take a perfect goat, kick it, whip it, spit on it, swear at it, and let it go out to the desert to die -- taking "the bad" of the community with it. Christ is the ultimate scapegoat -- taking the sins of the world, yet unlike the symbolic sort, being able to bear and forgive them.  Some of us used to say that the most important position on any software project at IBM was the scapegoat -- someone was going to have to be blamed for the inevitable bugs,  schedule slips, function forced to be cut, etc -- and one might as well name them in advance so there would be no issues with CYA and blame being ducked.

Humanity has to have scapegoats, and  tarring and feathering to run out of the NFL (town) on a rail has a rich American history. Violence against women is bad, doing it on cameral is really bad -- otherwise the outcry would have been in February, we knew he knocked her out. I'm fine with that,  I guess we have found something that left and right actually agree on.

Income Inequality, Working Poor, Wealthy, The Party

This is a topic that I run into in my personal life, and one which I see articles on that claim to be causes, but are actually effects. "Jobs moved overseas" is a great example -- companies don't move jobs overseas because they somehow "hate American workers", they move them there because American workers have become non-competitive due to policies of the government or decisions that the workers have made.

I suspect this topic will take more than one blog post, and I'll be looking for articles in support, but I'd like to get a start at the big picture framework -- my order or precedence may well change as I move through the topic (sometimes I change my blog posts after they have been posted).

My top level simple summary is that we have vast income inequality and working poor because runaway consumption fueled by debt and orchestrated by politicians seeking to buy votes from an ever larger dependent class creates few winners and many losers.

Those that provide the consumables, the credit (usually backed and/or aided by the government in one way or another) and orchestrate the politically favored wealth transfers become wealthy, while those that borrow and consume become poor -- so poor that even though they typically have a house, a car, smartphones, flat screen TV, internet, eat out regularly, gamble, etc, they are so cash strapped that they have to resort to payday loans, food pantries, etc to cover the most basic of needs at times.

They are marketed and sold a lifestyle that they are supposed to be "entitled to", taught nothing of delayed gratification and thrift, then further lied to with assurances that their problems are due to "the wealthy", "the 1%", etc. and will be "solved" by some version of government transfer payments.

That is the simple sound-bite answer, now for a tiny bit more depth on specifically how we got here.
  1. The Consumer Society -- During the latter half of the 20th century, America became a country based on CONSUMPTION. There are lots of things a country can be focused on -- excellence, personal responsibility, independence, learning, beauty, cleanliness, godliness, future generations, thrift, competitiveness ... the list is endless, but the US managed to make a very clear choice, and with the advent of radio, TV and finally the internet, this choice became so ubiquitous that most Americans are like fish in water relative to it -- not aware they are wet. We used to be a nation of fiercely independent hard workers with pride in quality output, now we are a nation of "consumers".

Entertainment is part of that consumption. Americans have next to zero attention span these days, which makes any sort of understanding of any issue by any significant number of them to be nearly impossible. The vast bulk of people have arrived at the state where life involves constant entertainment -- sports, music, TV, web surfing, smart phones, etc, all of which is laced with sophisticated advertising telling them to buy, buy, buy. "Work" if they do it, is a nasty necessity where many of them want to stay plugged in to at least music, if not continued web surfing or other distractions while they bide their time at a job that they see as a "necessary evil". Working is seen as an obstacle to constant entertainment and consumption.

Our nation is focused on a vicious cycle of advertising laced entertainment encouraging more buying that consumes more of the life of the "consumer" -- Americans have largely been converted to 24x7 consuming devices rather than people.

  2. Credit -- Shakespeare says "Neither a borrower or a lender be, For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry". America is sad proof of that maxim, and our knowledge of "husbandry", or wise use of resources, is so dull as to be non-existent. Not only have we been told to consume, consume, consume, but the primary means for that consumption is borrow, borrow, borrow -- as individuals and as a nation we are awash in debt and show no signs of any ability to extricate ourselves.

Indeed, given the consumptive base of the economy, it is hard for most to even visualize an alternative. Mortgage, auto, consumer debt always flirt with new all-time highs, and Americans borrowing and spending more is considered "good news". Local, state and federal government run up ever more massive debt in numbers too big to even really fathom -- hundreds of billions a year, trillions a year, 17 trillion in debt, 60 trillion in unfunded liabilities for FICA, Medicare, and now BOcare. The total red ink hemorrhages to levels where it makes us sick to even consider it -- so we don't, and "nobody can explain" why we have "income inequality" and "working poor".

The most basic reason is because the folks providing the consumables and the credit to the "consumers" build wealth,  while the consumers get "stuff" (soon worthless) and debt. Anyone who consumes all they make are effectively "the working poor", those that consume MORE than they make (debt) are even poorer. No matter how high the income, they are a paycheck away from financial disaster, and no matter how big their home, shiny their car, large their TV, etc, they are actually poor. The typical dual income "good job" US family is a microcosm  of how our government operates -- over extended with ever ballooning payments due.

  3. Government -- The big daddy in all this is bloated government at all levels. Government is an EXPENSE. It produces nothing on it's own, and right now the layers of government in the US are taking something around 40% of our GDP and rising. Most of our population has consumed itself into being working poor, and the government that is somehow supposed to "fix this" is poor as well.

Ah you say, the government is the "only friend of the average American". Well, yes if you consider the pimp, the pusher and the loan shark to be "friends" of those that believe themselves in "need"  of those services. In fact, when I was watching TV as a child in the '60s Dragnet, Streets of San Francisco and such often arrested guys "running the numbers" -- today, the states "run the numbers" in lotteries as one more way to fleece their citizens.

The primary business of government in the US today is the transfer of payments from the pockets of one set of people (mostly the young) to another set of people (mostly the old) -- entitlements are 75%+ of current US government "spending" -- which is essentially calling what Jessie James and Billy the Kid did "spending" rather than stealing. Stealing is taking money from one person by force and allowing another person to decide what to do with it. The purpose of government transfers is to buy votes for the ruling party (TP "The Party, Democrat), so the allocation of the funds is random to completely adverse to actual productivity. Productivity which would build capital, lower prices and provide the hope of an actually better future is replaced by an economy of buying more power for TP.

The price of everything purchased is increased by government -- regulations, fees, taxes, licenses, permits ... each is a cost and each is added to the cost of the product. One of the larger lies of government is the constant direct or indirect promise of a "free lunch" -- as in raising the minimum wage. When the wage is increased, the price of the product goes up, labor is reduced by automation or less service, or the production moves offshore ... most likely some combination of all three.

What about the businessman making less profit? Very unlikely -- most small businesses are largely based on the idea of building up equity in a going concern. The dream that they can work hard, not take much income out, plow profits back into improving the business and build a better future. Government is certainly fine with killing that dream and putting another entrepreneur out of business ('you didn't build that"), but for those that had the gumption to go into business in the first place, it is a hard dream to kill -- they will try to raise the prices or increase efficiency.

It works no better for the large business. Increase the cost of production in the US, tax profit, etc and first the jobs leave the US, and eventually the entire business (see Burger King moving to Canada, Medtronic and many others). The government policies make the US a poor place to invest, so the business goes elsewhere and the US has less jobs. Another win for TP since DEPENDENCE ON GOVERNMENT is what the TP agenda is all about!

Prior to FDR, a common view of financial life for a person in the US was "work hard, spend less than you make, and invest the difference in something that goes up in value". Such a view is likely to create largely successful people and a largely successful nation over time, which makes it a hated view for TP.  TP grows in power by the creation of ever more dependence and resentment in a greater and greater percentage of the population. That is their bread and butter in building their majority and power.

Replacing "work hard, control spending and invest wisely" with "join a union, spend everything you make, and the government will take care of you when you are old" was and is the core brilliance of TP in gaining power. As unions and government priced the American worker out of the world market with ever higher wages, more benefits and more restrictive work rules, TP faced a challenge. Their solution has been brilliant -- ever increasing unemployment benefits, re-training payments, "disability" payments and out and out income support for less and less output (Earned Income Credit). Over 50% of our population is now receiving a government payment of one sort or another -- the TP voting bloc is ever more secure.
I see those three legs of the stool of dependence, debt, poverty and eventual economic collapse as being the main aspects that need to be understood in approximately that order -- one could argue that government is #1, and that 1 and 2 are EFFECTS of the designs of TP as well, I'm not really that concerned about the order, because all three legs have to be basically repudiated for the nation to move forward, and they are all very much linked ... and largely unknown to the average constantly entertained "consumer", more and more afraid and "bitterly clinging" to the supposed safety promised by their keepers -- TP, and it's wealthy elite.

Who and where are "the wealthy" in all of this? The favorite bogymen of TP? In general, they are quite happy members of TP -- unless you are a VERY brave wealthy person, you nearly have to be lest the IRS, Environmental Protection Agency, OSHA, one of the myriad of anti-discrimination agencies, or some other in the alphabet soup of TP enforcers takes you down -- HARD! So the Gates, Buffets, lawyers, finance and entertainment types play the TP game -- let "the marks", the consumer debtors believe that TP is somehow "hard on the rich" if it makes them feel better. There are only 1% of them anyway ... they have control of education, the media and largely the political discourse except for FOX news, talk radio and some renegade bloggers, so it is very easy to control the story line that the typical low information voter is indoctrinated with.

The way out of this morass is simple, however the hole that has been dug is massive. As individuals and as a nation we need to work hard, consume less than we make and invest the difference in things that go up in value. At a basic level, I believe we all know this -- it is one of the reasons that the constant distraction of the media machine is so critical to the continued power of TP.

TP and it's supporters will naturally scream "well, EVERYONE CAN'T do this" ... Indeed. Much as the old joke of the two folks facing a bear when one guy starts putting on tennis shoes. The other says "You don't really think you can outrun that bear do you?" The guy with the tennis shoes says "I don't have to outrun the bear, only you!"

How cruel you say. Indeed, it is a joke of course, but the message is that winners and losers are inevitable. Right now TP and the 1% are the ever increasing winners and the 99% are being eaten by the bear. Break the stranglehold of TP, consumption and debt, and something like 80-90% of the population and the nation as a whole become far wealthier, the future begins to look like prospects of ever increasing wealth, and the US becomes ever more competitive against "the bears" on the world stage. The BIG loser is TP and the current 1% -- who will be replaced by a different set of 1, 10, 20, 30%ers with far more wealth than the current concentration enjoys.

Ah, but what about "the bottom"? As Jesus said "the poor will always be with us", BUT, rather than 40, 50% and much more of the population living from hand to mouth and demanding help from TP and it's minions, 10 or 20% will still be at food pantries and needing support -- there will just be a lot more REAL resources (not borrowed) to provide them with true basics -- not continued consumption and dulling mindless entertainment to be "consumed".

Much like what it used to mean to "grow up", being an adult in a non-TP America would mean focusing on responsibilities vs "rights".  We have lost our way, but the way out is actually far more meaningful and conducive to human happiness and growth than the false narrative that has been sold to most of us by TP in it's drive to destroy the fabric of America to be replaced with their own raw power.
